A Lifelong Promise to Help Others
For Peter, volunteering isn’t just something he does—it’s a promise he made as a child, and one he continues to honour to this day.
“I volunteer because I made a promise as an eight-year-old Wolf Cub—to help other people.
As a Scout, I pledged to do a good turn every day, and I like to keep my promises.”
That early sense of duty has shaped a lifetime of giving back. Through his work with Sight Loss Shropshire and other charitable causes, Peter brings compassion, reliability and a genuine willingness to support others, especially those facing the challenges of sight loss.
Volunteering has brought connection and purpose to Peter’s life, too:
“I would find life very lonely if I didn’t get involved with charitable causes. Volunteering helps me appreciate what I have, especially when I see the difficulties others are dealing with.”
His advice to those thinking about volunteering is thoughtful and encouraging:
“Make sure you enjoy whatever tasks you take on. It’s great if you can use your existing skills to help others, but it’s also valuable to step outside your comfort zone and develop new ones.”
Peter’s approach to volunteering is a wonderful reminder that small promises can lead to lifelong impact.
We’re proud to have him as part of the Sight Loss Shropshire community.
