Turning Lived Experience into Life-Changing Support

At Sight Loss Shropshire, many of our volunteers have a personal connection to sight loss—and one of our valued volunteers is using her own experience to support others going through similar journeys.

Motivated by a desire to give back, Lottie explains:

“I want to support organisations that have helped me. With Sight Loss Shropshire, it’s about raising awareness of the real impact of sight loss on daily life—and making sure that people newly diagnosed know that support is out there. I want to help them avoid some of the basic mistakes I made early on.”

By sharing her own insight and offering practical advice, she helps others navigate those early stages of adjustment with confidence and hope.

For Lottie, one-to-one conversations are where the impact is felt most.

“I always feel satisfied when I’ve had a meaningful conversation with someone and can see that it’s helped them move forward. That’s what it’s all about.”

When asked what she’d say to someone considering volunteering, her advice is reassuring and realistic:

“Honestly? Start small. Just do one thing and see how it goes. Try a few different roles—there will be something out there where you will make a difference.”

We’re so grateful for the personal experience, empathy, and encouragement Lottie brings to our work.

Volunteers like her remind us how powerful peer support can be in helping others feel less alone—and more informed—on their sight loss journey.
