Using Skills to Make a Difference, One Step at a Time
Meet one of our dedicated volunteers at Sight Loss Shropshire, whose thoughtful approach to volunteering shows how small actions can have a big impact.
With a background in design engineering, Brian brings a problem-solving mindset to every new challenge. His motivation to volunteer comes from a desire to give back—both locally and globally—and to improve the quality of life for others.
“I got tired of hearing myself and others say, ‘someone should do something about that’. I realised I could be that someone—and even if I can only make a small difference, it’s worth doing.”
For Brian, volunteering is more than a contribution—it’s a source of purpose, growth, and learning.
“Each new encounter brings a new challenge, and with it, an opportunity for self-learning. It pushes you beyond your comfort zone. As an engineer, I’ve always thrived on solving problems, and volunteering gives me that same sense of satisfaction when something is achieved successfully.”
His message to anyone considering volunteering is simple but powerful:
“Do it. The commitment and personal rewards are incredible. Volunteering takes you out of your own self-centred world and gives you perspective. It’s a reminder of what truly matters.”
We’re proud to have volunteers like Brian, whose skills, compassion and can-do spirit help make our work possible and improve the lives of people living with sight loss across Shropshire.
